Director’s Statement

NUHMIBEEUHN examines Germany's colonial genocide in Namibia-
an atrocity that foreshadowed the Holocaust but remains largely unacknowledged. Originally a New York Times op-ed, the project evolved into my MFA thesis at UC Berkeley, developed across sculpture, installation, and film, and exhibited at BAMPFA's 52nd Annual Graduate Exhibition.

The short film is licensed for educational streaming through the University of Michigan. With Dr. Miriam GK, I co-taught Germany's Genocides in Africa and Europe at Colby College, supported by the Berger Family Holocaust Fund. UC Berkeley's Black Studies Collaboratory provided critical funding. The Bay Area's socially engaged community shaped my practice and this work.

Through screenings, exhibitions, and lectures, NUHMIBEEUHN has catalyzed conversations about transnational anti-Black violence and collective memory. I'm now developing a 90-minute feature documentary. Contact me or sign up for our quarterly newsletter to stay updated and support the project.

With gratitude,

Kavena
